Pack it Up, Pack it In, Let me Begin

This is what happens when you volunteer to be the guy that goes to IKEA and picks up a lot of furniture for the office...

We moved to a bigger studio, so now we have a little more room and needed more storage. We had stuff just stacked up in piles in our old space.  Plus, we have added a person who didn't have a desk yet. Since I was already heading to Chicago I said I would stop and get the furniture.

Packed into my car (which seems quite spacious, possibly to a point of deceiving me though) is:

  • 2 HUGE glass desk tops (these were the trouble makers)
  • 2 desk frames
  • 8 desk legs
  • 2 book shelves
  • 4 door inserts for bookshelves
  • 3 file cabinets
  • shoe cabinet for home
  • lamp
  • various small things, hangers, metal basket, etc.
It was pretty much a game of giant heavy Tetris to get it in there. I am guessing I gave my suspension a run for the money too. I know the bookshelves are 90lbs each, and the desks are even heavier. We also had to move the seats up quite a bit. Enough where I wouldn't be able to drive the car, so my wife drove while I crammed into the passenger seat.

As an added extra you get to see my awesome taillights. Too bad they weren't lit up, they just light up as bright red circles. AND yes, it was raining, which made the drive so much fun and taking it all up to my office a pain (it was a one man job to take it all up to the office, thankfully we have an elevator).

Collect

When I saw the Collect bookcase from Normann Copenhagen I was instantly drawn to it. The fantastic color, the woodgrain showing through, how smooth it looked. It just made me want to touch it.

It looks like it could be at home in a cabin, in an office, in a sitting room, kid's room, anywhere. Although I would like to see how it looks like filled with books or whatever else you would put in it. It is such a beautiful object right now, I hope it wouldn't detract from it.

Once again, this is why I need a studio space and/or workshop. I want to run out there grab some plywood (although this is made with green pine) and make one. One day...

It is 55" x 55" and 2,700 Euro ($3700 USD, another reason why I would like to go make one)

Make Your Computer do the Heavy Lifting

Ok, so most of you have external hard drives out there, and the thing is, most of the time we are trying to hide them. Why? Because they don't really need to be on your desk, and most of the time they don't look that great. Plus, if you have an eternally messy desk like mine, you don't even have room for them.

Enter the Twelve South Backpack. It is made of heavy gauge steel and fits on the back of your imac and cinema displays. Gravity is it's best friend, which it uses to attach itself to the back of your setup, and support your favorite backup drive.

The only problem I foresee is having extra cable since it will be so close to the port. It says the perforated base can be used to tie them up with. I would probably wrap it around the part of the stand above the shelf

However that perforation can help you out too, it is probably to cut it's own weight down but that should help with heat distribution too.

You could stick a couple of them back there and hide a literal treasure drove of low profile drives.

Gp pick one up for $30, with free shipping for a limited time.

Oh! How about that logo too! Fantastic job on an icon.

Fluffy Clouds on a Rainy Day

I am getting a little tired of the rain and cold. What happened to fall seriously...

This is a great shelf by Estela Lugo. These would look great just single on a wall like they have in the photo or an entire wall of them. I also think that it would be fantastic almost anywhere, not just a kids room. It would be a bright and cheery side for any home library.

Plus, how fantastic is that blue wall, so happy compared to the grey I have here.

I am also putting this on the DIY list. A scroll saw and some paint and you are in buisiness.

Available at Fawn & Forest for $72

Offi Scando

This table has been on my wish list for quite awhile now, and it will probably be on there for a bit longer. My idea is to have it in my future studio/workspace, and it will be awhile until I have one of those. Although it would look good with our furniture in our current living room too, but it is a bit out of my price range right now. A boy can dream though, can't he?

This is the Offi Scando coffee table and is made from bent plywood. The entire shape of it is fantastic and has a really nice sized work area. You just need to have low furniture, since it is a lower table. It comes in a multitude of colors and is priced from $499-$599.

Bent plywood has really been on my mind lately, and I am thinking of redoing my desktop with plywood. The industrial steel isn't doing it for me anymore. Next time I make my way to my parent place, it might be a weekend project for my dad and I.

The top two photos are from Design Public where you can purchase the table. The bottom one is of Tina's Apartment (better known as Swiss Miss) and the post about her coffee table from Apartment Therapy.

Big Calendar

Unfortunately, I do not remember where I found this photo, but I e-mailed it to myself awhile ago. I think it was originally featuring the desk, but I grew fond of the calendar.

Nice, big type, perpetual, what more could you ask for?

A DIY might be in order.

Everything (and anything) can be type!

Lately it seems that there is a flood of objects of various sorts being made into type. I always find it quite interesting to take a possibly mundane object and convert it into a typographical form. Although the eyelashes make me cringe a bit, they have a wonderful textural feeling to them.

Makes me think about some of the others I have seen over the years, with the two that stand out in my memory the most, possibly because I am a diehard carnivore, packaged meat typography (i'll find the link around here someday), and in school someone had made a typeface from scanning strips of steak.
